Here are some things you have to consider: 

 

1. Fly Line. We used full sinking line and intermediate sinking lines to get the flies down 10-20 feet so the fish could come up and grab them 

2. Water Temperature. We noticed action when the water was between 46-49 degrees, but this varies for every location! 

3. Understand the lake you are at. The depth, time of year, where the fish eat, where the deep parts are. We used a fish finder to help us out.
