What You Need to Start Fly Fishing

Fly Rod & Reel

You are just starting. Go to your local sporting goods store. Buy a 5-weight fly rod. This is my go-to size for rivers and streams! If you will be doing lakes, do a 7-weight fly rod! If you are doing small streams with small fish, 3-weightt will do. If you want to learn more about fly-rods you can read our blog. (Bigger the fly rod “weight”, bigger the fish it can handle.)

Fly Box

We have some cute fly boxes you can buy! Smaller flies, smaller fly box. There are lots of types, don’t stress over this one. But fly boxes are fun! I love organizing mine.

Leader + Tippet

There are 4 parts to your fly line! If you buy a kit, you won’t have to worry about the first 2! The backing is the very first part, it’s a thread like material, and then your fly line is next. this is the colored part you see. There are many types of fly line. But don’t worry about that right now. If you want to know more, you can read our blog post.

Here is the leader to buy (This is the piece that connects your fly line and your tippet): https://amzn.to/4cgEyiG

We actually make tippet, I reccomend buying 4x and 5x to start!

Flies

There are 10000x flies. Learning what to use, is a constant learning process. So how the heck do I know what type of fly I should use?

HOW TO KNOW WHAT FLY TO CHOOSE:

  • Are you fishing in a river, lake, pond, or small stream?
  • Where are you located?
  • What time of year is it?
  • What type of fish am I going after?
  • Google what flies are in your area, this time of year. There will be people that will make recommendations on what flies to use based on where you live. The internet is amazing.
  • Buy a few of those flies https://www.discountflies.com/category/dry_flies.html

If you are fishing rivers and streams, you will want 2 types of flies to start.

  • Dry Flies
  • Nymphs

If you are fishing lakes, you will want:

  • Streamers
